Positioned in the center of the bridge's moveable span, the toll booth of the two-lane Dumbarton highway bridge caused many a traffic jam. From his booth, the toll collector also pulled the ropes that raised and lowered the gates that held back traffic. Caltrans photo
Built by the Dumbarton Bridge Company and dedicated on January 15, 1927, the Dumbarton highway drawbridge was the first highway crossing of San Francisco Bay and, for a short while, the world's longest bridge. Costing $2,000,000, it joined Menlo Park in San Mateo County with Newark in Alameda County.
This aerial photo shows the Dumbarton highway bridge as it stretches for 6 1/2 miles across the bay and salt ponds to the eastern shore. Caltrans photo.
This photo was taken at 2:55 p.m. on September 24, 1984 at the moment explosive charges brought down the lift span of the Dumbarton bridge. The lift towers and counterweights received the same treatment a week or two later. In the photo, the newly completed high-level San Mateo fixed bridge is in the foreground and beyond the old Dumbarton bridge can be seen sections of the existing S.P.R.R. drawbridge.
